The Zodiac Room - The New Built-In Restaurant by AvroKO

AvroKO created an all-day dining and bar concept, called The Zodiac Room in the Hudson Yards, where Neiman Marcus brought together the New York-centric food and beverage vendors, as well as merchandise.

AvroKO designed a sophisticated and innovative narrative by reinterpreting classical inspirations from New Formalism through a modern microscope, establishing the local avant-garde spirit of The New York School’s poets, painters and creatives, and inducing inspiration from the futuristic vision of Neiman Marcus‘s own fascinating Fortnight events – a world-famous celebration of international culture, cuisine and fashion.

The overall space is divided into three experiences leading the guests from the least formal to the most animated, to an enveloping and more classic dining room. The facade evokes elements of New Formalism while incorporating modern brass screens with perforated and laser-cut detailing, which makes the transition from retail store to the restaurant in one elegant stroke. Mid-Century influences also appear in abundant arches, with a cool pallet of slate blue and grey, and perforated brass detailing.

To further evoke this time period, a chandelier – custom made by AvroKO furniture and lighting design Goodshop – features pleated lampshades arranged in a lantern-inspired form.

To create a restaurant within a space that already exudes hospitality was not a stretch, but rather an extension of the already guest-centered Neiman Marcus brand. – said Kristina O’Neal.

That said, we made sure there was a cohesive feel in conjunction with the retail space, but also gave it its own personality as an independent restaurant destination.

For the eye-catching debut of New York‘s first Neiman Marcus department store, local firm AvroKO transformed the retail icon’s signature restaurant called the Zodiac Room, into a dramatic, yet welcome respite from the bustling mega-development Hudson Yards where it resides.
